Who Are We
Gus and Ri are the husband-and-wife team behind Roads Less Traveled Africa, a boutique inbound travel company based in the small safari town of Hoedspruit, South Africa. Nestled on the doorstep of some of the country's most renowned Big Five game reserves—including the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve—they are fortunate to call one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations home.
Their shared passion for travel, conservation, hospitality, and authentic cultural experiences forms the foundation of everything they do. Together, they create thoughtfully curated journeys that introduce guests to the hidden gems, remarkable wildlife, and meaningful encounters that make Southern Africa so extraordinary.
Meet Ri
Originally from the Netherlands, Risette relocated to South Africa in 2010 to join a bush school and wildlife orphanage as Volunteer Coordinator. Her passion for people, wildlife, and adventure soon led her into luxury lodge management, where she gained valuable experience managing safari lodges in both South Africa and Mozambique.
Building on her hospitality background, Ri transitioned into travel planning, working as an independent travel consultant for leading inbound tour operators before co-founding Roads Less Traveled Africa. Her extensive destination knowledge, meticulous attention to detail, and genuine love for creating unforgettable experiences ensure that every itinerary is carefully tailored to each guest's interests and travel style.
Meet Gus
Gus spent 19 years living and working in East Africa before returning to his home country of South Africa to pursue his passion for wildlife guiding. He worked as a guide on private game reserves before moving into luxury lodge management in Mozambique and later Operations Management for a day-tour company in Cape Town.
In 2023, Gus founded Roads Less Traveled Africa with a clear vision: to offer travellers a more authentic way to experience Southern Africa through alternative destinations, meaningful local connections, and personalized service. His wealth of firsthand travel experience, operational expertise, and passion for sharing Africa's hidden treasures continue to shape every journey the company creates.
